Calabria is the farthest Southern region of continental Italyalso known as the toe of the boot. The region has been conquered by different empires, kingdoms or groups throughout history, but sees much less action nowadays.
Calabria was the first region to take the name of Italy, but it has also been the stage for many takeovers throughout the years. Greeks, Romans, Spanish and Arabs have passed by and left a bit of their influence somehow.
The cities of Reggio Calabria and, specially, Bova Marina are not the most popular tourist destinations in the country, but they are still surrounded by an amazing deep blue Mediterranean Sea and they're filled with a particular quietude—more notably when it's off-season.
